The 2012 Canadian Tulip Festival marks the 60th commemorative edition and will be held from May 4 - 21st, 2012!!
In a departure from other years, the Festival events will be held throughout the core of the Capital in such places as the Byward Market, Little Italy, Chinatown and other popular locations.
The namesake tulip beds will be blooming at Commissioner's Park, Dow's Lake and Major's Hill Park. Many different varieties have been planted so that there will always be something in bloom when you visit between May 4th and 21st!
This year's activities include some fantastic entertainment! The Festival's kick-off parties begin on May 4th in the Byward Market and a Commemorative 60th anniversary Garden Party is taking place at "Blue Gables" (date and time TBA).
From May 11th to the 21st, Musicians and bands can be found in the Byward market, Little Italy and Chinatown. There will be performances on the streets and in restaurants.
The Great Canadian Tulip Treasure Hunt is still under wraps, but we are sure it will be as exciting as ever!
For Mother's Day, you can take her to the Mad Hatter Tea Party in the Byward market or to the International Pavilion in Little Italy.
You also will not want to miss out on Chinatown's celebration of the Tulip in this Year of the Dragon. Take part in the multi-cultural exhibits and events which are offered from May 4th through May 31st.
The Canadian Tulip Festival (in Ottawa) is the largest
tulip festival in the world and it is held every year in May. Can you imagine standing
amongst millions of tulips? The colours are absolutely breathtaking.
We like to think of this festival as the time when Ottawa comes alive – winter has ended, the flowers are blooming and the warmer weather arrives!
Are you asking yourself why does Ottawa have such a large tulip festival? We
always enjoy explaining the history of the festival to our friends and family who come to
visit. It truly is a special story.
In 1945, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands donated
100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa to thank us for our hospitality during the Second World
War. The Dutch Royal Family was exiled and came to Ottawa for a place of safety.
Princess Margriet was also born at that time in one of our hospitals. The first Tulip
Festival was held in 1953 and the rest, as they say, is history.
We really look forward to another great Festival. The organizers of the festival put a lot of work into it. They do such a fantastic job of making Ottawa an even better place to live and visit.

Enjoy tiptoeing through the tulips (actually, please don't tiptoe through them – it is just an expression)! But do enjoy the colours, the sounds and the fresh spring air!
