Ottawa Tulip Festival

The Ottawa Tulip Festival is the largest tulip festival in the world and it is held every year in May. Can you imagine standing amongst millions of tulips? The colours are absolutely breathtaking.

We like to think of this festival as the time when Ottawa comes alive – winter has ended, the flowers are blooming and the warmer weather arrives!

The 2008 Ottawa Tulip Festival will be held from May 2 to 19, 2008. The activities that are planned are spectacular.

Are you asking yourself why does Ottawa have such a large tulip festival? We always enjoy explaining the history of the festival to our friends and family who come to visit. It truly is a special story. In 1945, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands donated 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa to thank us for our hospitality during the Second World War. The Dutch Royal Family was exiled and came to Ottawa for a place of safety. Princess Margriet was also born at that time in one of our hospitals. The first Tulip Festival was held in 1953 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Commissioners Park at Dows Lake is one of the most popular spots of the Ottawa Tulip Festival. Over 300,000 tulips will bloom at this site in the month of May. Some of the events at Commissioners Park include:

  • Tulip Legacy Exhibit
  • Tulip Painters
  • Artists in the Tulips
  • Art Gallery & Tulip Boutique
  • Music in the Tulips

One of the other most popular places to be during the Festival is Major's Hill Park because this is where a lot of the events will be. There will be activities and entertainment for the entire family including:

  • Music in the Tulips
  • International Pavilion
  • Artists in the Tulips

There will be great shows for the entire family to see this year so make sure to bring the entire gang! We really look forward to another great Festival. The National Capital Commission (NCC) puts a lot of work into this Festival and many others. They do such a fantastic job of making Ottawa an even better place to live and visit.

For more information then check out the Tulip Festival Website.

Enjoy tiptoeing through the tulips (actually, please don't tiptoe through them – it is just an expression)! But do enjoy the colours, the sounds and the fresh spring air!
